Okay, so this is the first piece of poetry I’ve written since 2004, plus it’s just a fragmentary draft.

Actually I was trying to work on something about Cossacks and Pechenegs, but I just wasn’t feeling it. It was too smarmy and pedantic. Anyways, this is gonna be incomprehensible to anyone who isn’t familiar with the geography and history of Honolulu. See if anyone can hazard a guess!

King and University

Beneath where the cinema was
Hollowed limestone and stagnant air
Sit above water, the pylons laid decades before
To shore up the visage of Doris Day
Are the home of wide eyed mullet, and secreted bones of people who
Regaled at stories of the resonant stones of the gods and
The only exchange between worlds was when a line would drop
Down a hole to haul
A fish out shocked to see
Light for the first and last time.
